Bulgaria's EU accession

As all of you already know Bulgaria is part of the second stage of the EU's fifth enlargement and will join the union on January 1st, 2007. The accession date was confirmed by the monitoring report of the European Commission announced on September 26th, 2006. The Commission essentially stated that Bulgaria is “sufficiently prepared to meet the political, economic and acquis criteria”.

Bulgaria's preparation for the EU accession comprised reforms in all sectors of the economy, the social and political life. Bulgarian legislation was set in compliance with EU legislation in force. The Government introduced various measures to improve the investment climate and the business environment in the country. One of the latest steps undertaken in such respect was the decision of the Bulgarian Parliament to cut the corporate tax by 5 points to 10% in 2007. Thus Bulgaria will have the lowest corporate tax in Europe.

As a law firm we are now preparing to face the new challenges and opportunities that will occur with the EU accession. We will have not only to implement a lot of new statutory provisions but also to enlarge our professional expertise and knowledge in order to meet the new competitive requirements of the union.

We hope that after the EU accession our Consulegis membership will develop in new directions and aspects which will contribute to the growth of the entire network. We believe that the new perspectives of Bulgaria being part of the union will give better opportunities for all professionals, including legal experts.
