Malek is a Lebanese lawyer working on a number of major oil and gas projects in the Middle East. He was previously based in Aberdeen with an international oil and gas law firm advising a range of clients operating in the UK Continental Shelf. He is now based in Beirut and is actively involved in advising major and independent oil companies in Arab countries and particularly in Iraq. He has a master’s degree in oil and gas law from the University of Aberdeen and has made a number of publications related to Iraqi and Lebanese laws. Malek has been actively involved for the past 2 years in studying the maritime boundaries dispute between Lebanon and Israel. and was commissioned by the office of the United Nations Special Coordinator for Lebanon to prepare a detailed legal report on this subject at a time when Lebanon was trying to seek the assistance of the UN for the delimitation of its southern maritime boundaries. Malek also serves as the director of the Beirut-based Institute for Development Research and Consultancies and is regularly appointed by the UNDP and Transparency International to draft papers covering anti-corruption laws and initiatives in Arab countries.
